Cmdr. Richard Grant is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He enlisted in the Navy in 1992 and was commissioned through the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 2002. He graduated from the University of North Florida, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and also holds a Master of Business Administration from Webster University. He completed the Joint Professional Military Education Phase I and is a Joint Qualified Officer.

Grant’s sea duty assignments include: Force Protection and Fire Control Officer aboard USS Klakring (FFG 42); Damage Control Assistant aboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64); Engineer Officer aboard USS Boone (FFG 28); Training Officer aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5); Executive Officer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96); and most recently, he assumed the duties and responsibilities as Commanding Officer aboard Bainbridge, October 2020.

Ashore, Grant’s assignments include: Training Liaison Officer at Afloat Training Group (ATG) Mayport; Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Lead for Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic; and Secretary of Defense Orders Writer and Sea Power Joint Working Group Lead on the Joint Staff, Deputy Directorate for Regional Operations (DDRO/J35).

His decorations and awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), and various unit awards and citations.
